International Society of Arboriculture Hosts Tree Climbing Contest at Lake Shore Park

 March 21, 2008

On March 15-18, the Southern Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture held their annual meeting in Knoxville, which featured the Southern Chapter's Tree Climbing Championship held at Lake Shore Park on Sunday March 16. Twenty-five arborists from all around the world competed in five events, including the Secured Footlock Climb, Belayed Speed Climb, Aerial Rescue, Work Climb, and Throw Line.

We captured some of this fascinating event in pictures for you to enjoy! Many of these pictures are from the Work Climb. In this contest, the participant is tested in his/her ability to move about a tree using a tree-climbing rope and a saddle/harness. The contestant is required to visit five areas of the tree, and ring a bell. Climbers could earn additional points by completing different "tasks" at the five stations, and they were also judged on safety, style, poise, and creativity.
